How to Grow Rosemary from Seeds in a Pot

Since rosemary is a perennial herb that thrives in warm climates, it’s not possible to grow it outdoors during our harsh winters. However, growing rosemary on a windowsill is not a problem. It is easier to grow rosemary from seeds in a pot than in open ground.

How to Grow Rosemary

The pot for rosemary should be at least one liter in volume for a mature plant. While rosemary isn’t sensitive to soil quality, experience shows that investing in quality soil is worth it. Rosemary in a pot

  • Sow the seeds on the surface of the soil without covering them.
  • Spray the soil with warm water using a spray bottle, then cover it with plastic wrap. Make tiny holes in the plastic to allow airflow.
  • Rosemary seeds take a long time to germinate, and their germination rate is low. If sprouts don’t appear within 3 weeks, you may need to reseed.
  • Water the seedlings with a spray bottle, as young plants are fragile and can be easily damaged by water weight.
  • Fertilize a month after germination. Ensure that the soil is regularly loosened but not too deeply.

Rosemary loves sunlight (at least 6 hours per day) and needs regular watering. However, overwatering should be avoided, so an unglazed clay pot, which absorbs moisture, is ideal. Make sure the soil doesn’t dry out completely. Rosemary can be placed on the balcony in summer as it enjoys fresh air.

Wintering Rosemary

In winter, rosemary can be moved to a cool place with temperatures around 10-15°C (50-59°F). Water sparingly during this time but do not let the soil dry out completely. If you keep the plant in its usual location, remember that rosemary grows much slower in winter, so reduce watering to prevent root rot.

If you can provide additional lighting with grow lamps, rosemary will appreciate it, especially in winter.

Harvesting

You can start cutting rosemary once the plant reaches a height of 15 cm (6 inches). Pinch off the tops to encourage bushier growth. In winter, find a cool spot for the rosemary, but ensure the temperature doesn’t drop below 5°C (41°F). Rosemary can be grown year-round, but this requires a warm windowsill and supplemental lighting .
