Tarragon or estragon is a type of wormwood. It has a tangy, slightly spicy, and piquant flavor. Growing tarragon from seeds in a pot on your windowsill is very easy, even on a northern windowsill. It grows very quickly, and 2-3 bushes are enough for summer drinks.
How to Grow Tarragon from Seeds
- Tarragon has a woody root system that doesn’t spread much, so it doesn’t feel cramped in a pot.
- Plant it as you would any other greens: drainage at the bottom of the pot, soil, a few seeds, and then cover them with a centimeter of soil.
- Keep the soil slightly moist until the first sprouts appear. I water all my plants with a spray bottle, very carefully, to avoid washing away the soil or breaking the delicate sprouts.
In my case, the seeds had good germination, but only six of the sprouts became strong. Within just a month and a half, they started growing little side shoots.
The key thing is to avoid overwatering the seedlings, as this can lead to root rot , which cannot be fixed once it sets in. I recommend mixing the soil with perlite and vermiculite , as these components loosen the soil and absorb excess moisture, slowly releasing it back as the soil dries out.
When tarragon doesn’t get enough sunlight, it becomes stretched out, sparse, and slightly pale. In my opinion, an eastern-facing window is ideal for young tarragon.
Thanks to its chemical composition , tarragon has many beneficial properties that have found use in medicine .
